Embracing Innovation in Government: Global Trends 2019

Comprised of 36 developed countries, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is one of the most impactful intergovernmental organizations in the world. Within OECD, the Observatory of Public Sector Innovation (OPSI) serves as a forum for sharing insights on government innovation. In 2018/2019, OPSI and the United Arab Emirates’ Mohammed Bin Rashid Centre for Government Innovation partnered to conduct a global review that explores how governments are taking steps to make innovation a routine and integrated practice across the globe.

MISSION

As OECD planned the launch of their annual Embracing Innovation in Government review, they sought a partner to bring the report and its findings to life through data visualization, custom graphics, and carefully designed print layouts. In the report’s compelling case studies and findings, LGND saw a story waiting to be told, so we proposed creating an accompanying digital experience that would translate this wealth of information into an easily digestible overview of the different ways that governments innovate around the globe.

OUR PROCESS

Following our Discovery process, where we identified OECD’s audience goals, communications objectives, and brand direction, LGND created print templates, custom graphics, and moodboards to help set the tone for the Embracing Innovation in Government print report and its accompanying digital story. We worked closely with the OECD team to edit the report’s content while pulling out key highlights from the case studies and innovation trends to craft a narrative for our digital story.

Embracing Innovation in Government: Global Trends 2019 is a 128-page print report that is well-organized and beautifully designed with 30-plus custom graphics and data visualizations that bring the report’s fascinating case studies to life. The accompanying scrolling digital storytelling experience builds on a connective design and narrative to present each of the report’s trends and case studies in an easily consumable format, providing users with an accessible overview of the report and its findings.

LAUNCH

In partnership with the Mohammed Bin Rashid Centre for Government Innovation, the report and digital story were released by OECD in February 2019 at the World Government Summit in Dubai, a global platform dedicated to shaping the future of governments worldwide. The event brings together leaders and sets the agenda for the next generation of governments, focusing on how they can harness innovation and technology to solve universal challenges facing humanity.

“LGND was able to design and develop a beautiful print report and digital story in time for the seventh annual World Government Summit on February 10-12, 2019. The digital aspect was a first for the OECD, and helps to set a new standard for communicating complex information in an understandable way.”
