Campaign Like A Candidate

Michael Bloomberg is an American businessman, politician, philanthropist, and author. In late 2019, he entered the Democrat Primary and the race to become the next President of the United States. While his campaign for President ended shortly after Super Tuesday, LGND was proud to help the Mike 2020 campaign develop fact-based insights in the form of videos, social graphics, and data visualizations that highlighted many of the biggest issues we face as a nation.

Background

LGND CEO Matt Lockwood worked as a speechwriter for Michael Bloomberg during his first term as Mayor of NYC. For several years, Mike’s team worked tirelessly to help heal the city from the tragedy of 9/11 and to put it on a path to a secure and prosperous future. Mike’s data-driven approach of “You Can’t Manage What You Can’t Measure” got the job done.

Years later, Matt partnered with Mike Aleo—formerly Art Director in President Obama’s White House—to found LGND, a company dedicated to creating content that was as informative as it was beautiful.

LGND Campaign Process

01

LGND assembled a dedicated team of media strategists, data experts, designers, directors, producers, animators, and developers to staff the campaign 24/7.

Depending on the amount of content and number of assets, turnaround from concept to launch could be as fast as a few hours.

Working closely with the campaign’s policy and digital teams, LGND helped craft a detailed process to deliver high-quality visual assets at speed and scale.

As the campaign rolled out policy briefers, LGND was tasked with sourcing expert-level data, drafting creative copy, and designing the accompanying graphics.

03

Our work included original illustrations, animations, and data viz that were optimized for websites, tablets, and phones, and designed to be viewed on both the web and social media platforms.

LGND’s design and strategy teams iterated in real time with the campaign to ensure accuracy and clarity for every asset we created.

Active Shooter Incident Map

Mike Bloomberg has been fighting for common-sense gun safety laws for over 15 years. In 2013, he founded Everytown for Gun Safety—merging his earlier non-profit, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.

For the campaign, our team created an interactive map of active shooter incidents overlaid with state gun laws, demonstrating not only the scale of the problem but also how good public policy could mitigate the crisis.

Over the course of the campaign, LGND had the opportunity to work on critical issues ranging from immigration and education to economic inequality and gun safety—the same issues on which LGND has long been focused.

Helping good ideas win is at the core of our philosophy as storytellers. We build the right products to explain issues and advocate for solutions we believe in. More than any individual candidate or client, these issues drive our work.

Together we created more than 120 videos, 500 social graphics, and several immersive and interactive data visualizations that helped make these complex policy issues accessible and engaging.
